Do you ever find yourself wondering when is best to replace your brakes? What are the symptoms of bad brake rotors? How do I tell if it is the front or the rear brakes? When should I finally take it in to a shop? There are many signs of brake problems that could help one decide that enough is enough. For example, you may hear noises when the brake pedal is depressed (pushed down), the brake pedal may start to be able to be pressed fully down to the floor of the vehicle, or you may even feel a pulsation in the brake pedal when stepping on it. What are the components of the brakes on your vehicle you may ask? On your brakes there is the rotor (which is the big circular piece you see underneath the tire) and the brake pads (which is the smaller piece that sits on top of that brake rotor). For these newer cars with such infrequent oil change recommendations, we still suggest getting your oil changed every 5,000-7,500 miles. Why? Think of oil in your vehicle like your body and water. Our bodies are 60% water. There's always H2O streaming through us. Yes, we can go a few days without it, but it is still important to replenish ourselves and stay hydrated since we lose that water in different ways. However, the longer we go without water, the more our body starts to shut down and not cooperate. The same goes with our vehicles. Oil is constantly pumping throughout the vehicle and its engine. Here in Wisconsin there are 7 counties that are required to have their vehicles ran thru emissions including Kenosha, Milwaukee, Ozaukee, Racine, Sheboygan, Washington and Waukesha. This test is a way the state is able to monitor that the vehicle is running up to their standards and not putting pollutants into the air. The Wisconsin Vehicle Inspection Program also identifies vehicles that have tampered emissions control equipment. The owners of those vehicles are required to have tampered items replaced, repaired, or returned to properly working. When Does My Vehicle Need Testing? A vehicle will need to be tested every 2 years by a certified testing site. Vehicles manufactured in an odd year will get tested in years that are even and vice versa. For example, a vehicle manufactured in 1999 would be tested in 2018, 2020, 2022, etc. On the other hand, a vehicle manufactured in 2002 would be tested in 2019, 2021, 2023, etc. The test needs to be performed before the motorist is able t ... read more
